Comparison of In-vitro Activity of Mupirocin and Other Antibiotics Against Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Pus

Chun Inn-Ki
Abstract
One hundred seventy-one strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the pus of hospitalized patients in Chonnam National University Hospital, Kwangju Christian Hospital, and Chosun University Hospital were studied for determining their suscep¡þtibility to mupirocin, oxacillin, gentamicin, amikacin, tetracycline, erythromycin. ciprofloxacin, fusidic acid, and vancomycin by using agar dilution method.
Sixty-nine strains(40.4%) of S. aureus were susceptible to oxacillin(methicillin) and 102 strains(59.6%) were resistant. MIC range of mupirocin was less than 0.5 mg /ml and that of vancomycin was 0.25-4 mg /ml.
In comparison of MIC90, mupirocin, vancomycin, fusidic acid and ciproflocaxin were highly active with their MIC90 ranging from 0.5 to 2 mg/ml, whereas gentamicin, tetracycline, and erythromycin were less active with their MIC90 ranging from 128 to 512 mg /ml.
All strains were susceptible to mupirocin and vancomycin, and over 90% of strains tested were susceptible to fusidic acid and ciprofloxacin. But, about 70% of strains were resistant to gentamicin, tetracycline, and erythromycin, especially, 90% of methicillin-resistant S. aureus were resistant to gentamicin and erythromycin.
The results indicate that mupirocin may prove useful for treating of skin infections by Staphylococcus aureus including those MRSA.
